An AI sitemap is a structured content catalog designed to communicate a website's full content inventory to AI crawlers and language models, beyond what a traditional XML sitemap provides. While an XML sitemap tells crawlers which URLs to visit, an AI sitemap provides richer metadata: content types, topics covered, entity relationships, publication dates, and content summaries.
AI sitemaps are typically implemented as JSON files (often named catalog.json or similar) in the site's /ai/ directory, alongside llm.json and LLM.txt. Together these files form the AI-readable layer of a website's knowledge infrastructure.
